We live about an hour and change from Edison, we come here every so often to shop at Ranch 99 and stock up on our Chinese grocery supplies. When we do come to Edison, we always try to go to a restaurant as we dont have alot of authentic Shanghai/Taiwanese food in our area (Lehigh Valley, PA). Bang Bang is run by a native Sichuan/Chengdu couple. When we walked in, my mother asked if they were from Sichuan. When the couple confirmed they were indeed from Sichuan, my mother and them started speaking in their sing song dialect that is so indicative of Sichuan region. We let the owners order for us, we requested whatever their best dishes were, bring them on. I have to say, this place is very authentic...complete from the amazing pork buns, noodles, pork belly, cold chicken in chili sauce, and the marinated cucumbers that were among the best I've had. What also is authentic is the less-than amazing service which is indicative of most places like these in China. It's not the friendliest, but it's not completely off-putting either. It's a combination of "we're really busy making all this food, dont expect someone to be ready to wait on you immediately" and impatience with customers who dont know exactly what they want. Special note about the pork buns. These are NOT soup dumplings. They are steamed pork buns...and they are delicious. When I lived in Beijing in 1994 attending a university, I used to buy pork buns from a small place at night as a snack...they were so good. The buns at Bang Bang remind me of these same buns. The dough is stretchy, spongey, yet still hold up with the simple juicy pork filling. Personally, I'm just happy to find a restaurant not run by Chinese from Fu Zhou (you know what I mean). We'll be coming back to this place the next time we come to Edison. I'm really glad we were able to dine-in as well. There are some other highly rated restaurants in Edison that still only take out/delivery....seriously?
Nothing much has changed in over 3 years. Dan Dan is still the best IMO (only complaint being it came with 1 piece of bok choy, so we ordered another one with extra veggies worth $1.5 and got a few more the second time around). Also got the C2 wontons and they were delightful, as usual. Get the Dan Dan.
My favorite type of restaurant is no-frills-mom-and-pop shop. We stopped by Big Bang Noodle on our day trip to Edison today and it was amazing. Pictured here are the Big Bang wontons and braised beef with spicy soup. The spiciness of mala was just enough, complimented the flavors perfectly. The beef was amazingly flavorful and so tender. The wonton sauce was a salty flavor profile but also a hint of sweetness. I'm a big fan of spicy noodles soup and this place ranked pretty high up on my list. 9/10 The restaurant has a tablet for you to place the order. The menu is limited but everything looks very delicious. The owner was yelling out order numbers in mandarin (shout out to the bf and his elementary Mandarin LOL) but she was also gesturing the numbers with her hand as well. Our food came out fairly quickly. It is mostly self-serve as they have chopsticks, spoons and water by the register for you to grab for the table.
Atmosphere: 4 My husband went off to order and pick up our food. He said that the ordering process is really confusing. He didn't realize (as many didn't) that the order should be placed using the tablet-thing, so he was standing and waiting for someone to take his order. However, he felt ignored. It's possible it's because the staff didn't know how to communicate with him, or because he was supposed to order from the tablet-thing. After a while, they finally asked him what he wanted. He showed them the items that he circled on their menu and was able to order successfully. It wasn't until he saw a Chinese family confused about the ordering, and the staff showing the tablet-thing that he realized that that is how the orders should be placed. Portion: 5 There's a ton of food - we ordered a noodle each, and two different wonton dishes. If I weren't so hungry, I could have totally split my noodle soup into two meals. The spicy wontons were plenty and definitely could have been a meal on its own. Flavors: 5 The flavors were amazing. We ordered the Mother Qi's wonton soup (C1), Big Bang wontons (B1), Chili Zhajiang Noodle Soup (A11), Zhajiang Noodle Soup (A10), and Big Bang Noodles (A1). The spiciness level of the spicy dishes are perfect. Everything was appropriately flavored and it tastes SO authentic. I love that the bok choy in my Zhajian Noodle Soup (A10) is not overcooked. It is still crunchy even after my husband's drive home with the food. The wontons are perfectly flavored inside. Not bland at all. We will definitely be going there again - probably very soon. I am hooked! So glad that it's close to our house. I wish the ordering system is a bit more obvious for the customers though.
Oh my goodness. Stopped by because the boyfriend was in the mood for Dan Dan noodles and saw the reviews for this spot. Ordered the Dan Dan noodles and spicy wontons to go. I taste test everything in the car before leaving and it was so good that I sent him back inside to grab me a second order.
